Storm Éowyn has unleashed severe weather conditions across the UK and Ireland today, leading to widespread disruptions and safety concerns.

Weather Warnings and Impact

The Met Office has issued rare red weather warnings for parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, indicating a "danger to life" due to wind gusts reaching up to 114 mph. These warnings are in effect from 10 am to 5 pm today, covering regions including the Central Belt and Southwest Scotland. Amber and yellow warnings for wind and snow are also in place across other areas.


In Ireland, Met Éireann has declared a nationwide red warning, cautioning about extremely dangerous traveling conditions and the potential for coastal flooding. Record wind speeds of 183 kph (114 mph) were recorded at Mace Head in County Galway, surpassing previous records set in 1945.


Disruptions

  • Power Outages: Over 715,000 homes and businesses in Ireland are without power due to the storm's impact.

  • Transportation: More than 300 flights have been canceled across airports in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and Belfast, affecting approximately 50,000 passengers. All train services in Scotland have been suspended, and numerous ferry services are canceled.

  • Education: Hundreds of schools across the affected regions have closed as a precautionary measure.
